CPAF Receives Supporting Donation from the
Royal Thai Consulate-General, Los Angeles

CPAF was recently honored by the Royal Thai Consulate-General with a donation of $1,000 in recognition of the ongoing partnership between the two organizations to support the Thai-American community.

Under the leadership of Consul-General Tor Saralamba, the Consulate has been an instrumental partner for CPAF in raising awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault and educating the local Thai community in Los Angeles and surrounding areas about available resources and how to seek help. This partnership has enabled CPAF to enhance its outreach efforts, resulting in an increased number of Thai clients seeking support from CPAF.

Ms. Kwan Wimwipha Chaiun, Senior Virtual Community Outreach Specialist, and Ms. Bel Joseph, Grants Coordinator, were present to receive the donation on behalf of CPAF.

Engaging in National and Statewide Advocacy

CPAF’s Executive Director, Patima Komolamit, attended the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) and National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) Transitional Housing Territorial Grantee Gathering in Hawai’i (Havai-ee) a few weeks ago. CPAF is honored to be included as a technical assistance provider on this federal grant.

During the conference, Patima presented a workshop titled “Applying a Culturally Specific Lens to the Voluntary Services Model,” based on the notion that participation in transitional housing services should be voluntary and not on a condition of housing or receiving other services. This approach emphasizes respectful and welcoming behavior in all aspects of the work.

CPAF had the opportunity to engage with other organizations, including hearing about the unique challenges advocates face in reaching survivors and providing services. Grantees from Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the Samoan islands described how "natural disasters" are upending entire communities and they are the ones providing immediate crisis management. It is not necessarily because they have all the means to do so, but because it would be untenable to not do everything to help their community. Along with the other multiple responsibilities that these organizations and individuals take on within their community, they are now also becoming “first-responders” to climate disasters.

Hawai’i is native to people with ancestral ties to the Polynesians who arrived to Hawaiʻi over 1,500 years ago. Over time, through imperialism and colonialism, there are no more people who are 100% Hawaiian with a distinct culture, language, and heritage. Usually, Hawaiians are mixed with other ethnicities. 50% of Hawaiians do not live in Hawaiʻi, having been displaced from their ancestral land due to the high cost of living, exploitation of the land, and the tourism industry.

In August, Patima will join the ValorUS Statewide Conference 2024 in San Diego as a plenary speaker. VALOR's theme for 2024 is "Collective Voice. Collective Action. Collective Power." The 2024 Statewide Conference will bring together the community to envision a world free from sexual violence and help set a statewide agenda for the year to come.
