Event Logistics Committee

With how I was part of Youth Leadership, I had the opportunity to be able to work with CPAF to create the API Youth Forum. Due to how CPAF have worked with youth leadership to create TDVAM, I wanted to work with CPAF to create the Youth Forum. Moving on, one interesting fact is that I am a huge fan of Brown from Brown & Friends!

Event Logistics Committee

CPAF organized a 2 day program that I attended. I learned about how to form healthy relationships and got to know new people in the API community. I want to support my heritage by educating and spreading awareness around domestic violence. Fun Fact: I’m a freshman who’s run a marathon and loves dancing and baking!

Marketing Outreach and Recruitment Committee

I am currently in an internship with EM3, and got the opportunity to work with CPAF in making the API Youth Forum. Some fun facts about me is that I don't know how to swim, I ran my fastest mile in 5 minutes, and I play the bass guitar. I enjoyed my time making this event happen and hope to do it again.

Sokthea Phay is the Community Operations Director at the Community Development YMCA of Greater Long Beach. He is a proud father of two little kids. He is also the World YMCA United Nations Advocacy Representative, Nationally Certified YMCA Emerging Global Leader and Mental Health First Aid Instructor. At the Community Development Y, he provides leadership to create framework and programs through the YMCA New American Welcome Center to meet the needs of immigrant families through direct immigration, social and mental health services, community partnerships and bridge-building activities. During this time of crisis, he supports the Community Development YMCA team to mobilize resources and provide essential services to youth and families in need. In 2008 at the age of 19 years old, he was very passionate to start his YMCA career as the founding program director at the YMCA of Cambodia where founded the Cambodian Street Children Program. In Cambodia, extreme poverty and generational trauma were a significant issue - a lasting impact of the 1975-79 genocide where more than 1.7 million people died. He worked with thousands of Cambodian children and youth to break through the cycle of extreme poverty and generational trauma. This work impacted him deeply and taught him how ensuring social equity, inclusion and empowering youth to break through crisis are absolutely essential. In 2013, Sokthea and his family were sponsored to come to the U.S by Mr. Bob Cabeza, the senior vice president of the YMCA of Great Long Beach through the U.S Department of State Diversity Visa Program. Sokthea has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Teaching English as Foreign Language.

Da Eun Kim (she/her) is the co-host and producer of bamboo & glass, a podcast by 2 Asian American womxn highlighting perspectives worth sharing. She started bamboo & glass with her long-distance best friend, Sophia, as a way to strengthen their friendship as well as highlight conversations they have with their communities that they believe should be amplified. She has had quite an eclectic background: currently, she works as a Software Engineer at Google and is also an incoming MFA student at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Her career in tech began during her time as an undergraduate and graduate student at Stanford University, where she graduated with a B.S. in Symbolic Systems and M.S. in Computer Science. She has worked on products such as Google Earth, Google Slides, and Jamboard, and at companies such as Pixar Animation Studios. Her time at Pixar was transformative for her to realize she had a huge desire to share underrepresented narratives. Her experiences with the AT&T Shape Create-a-thon (where her first short film Many Names was a top 4 finalist) and the Jubilee Film Fellowship have given her the opportunity to now begin as a filmmaking student in August. She hopes to create fantastical cultural films, celebrating the folktales of our motherlands that are a form of our oral history. Feel free to talk to her about any of these careers, or about Hamilton, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Percy Jackson!
