Resilient, Not Silent #UnitedThroughLove

May is Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. We appreciate the supporters that reached out to us throughout the month, including Mattel's API-ERG group, which donated toys to the children and youth in our emergency and transitional shelters. CPAF conducted outreach at a Mental Health and Wellness Fair hosted by the City of Monterey Park, Bruggemeyer Library, and the Langley Senior Center. More than 150 people stopped by CPAF’s table during the event and received outreach materials in both English and Chinese.

Sign up now for CPAF's July P.E.A.C.E. Training!

The PEACE Facilitator's Guide is designed for adult facilitators working with parents and primary child caretakers, following the P.E.A.C.E.: Parenting with Empathy and Ahimsa for Child Empowerment program at Center for the Pacific Asian Family. This guide provides a framework overview, facilitator orientation, and module outlines geared for in-person sessions with parents and caretakers with key adaptations for conducting sessions in virtual settings. You can access the full guide after taking the training course. CPAF is currently recruiting for our next cohort of facilitators! Do you facilitate parenting programs, and/or are you interested? Fill out an interest form here. Our next training series will start with the first session in July.

Mother's Day Celebration

CPAF and Asian Pacific Women's Center (APWC) integrated in 2017, adding a third shelter to CPAF's operations. Recently, legacy supporters of APWC regrouped to form an advisory council in support of the transitional shelter. Advisory council members Judy Lam and Tina Lin organized a Mother’s Day celebration for shelter residents and their children. The event included a catered lunch, fashion exchange where mothers were able to select from donated clothes, jewelry, and handbags. The children created cards and designed coffee mugs to give to their mothers on Mother’s Day. Residents took family photos at a "selfie station." We thank CPAF’s volunteers (pictured above) and the new advisory council for their support in helping us create a memorable day for the families in our shelters!

Advocate Training Participants'
Commitment to be United Through Love

During the first session of CPAF’s most recent Advocate Training, participants shared their commitments to being United Through Love. Over nine weeks, Advocate Training covers a variety of topics related to domestic violence, trauma-informed care, cultural humility, language access, sexual assault, vicarious trauma and self-care, nonviolent parenting, and crisis intervention, among other things. Throughout our time together, participants revisit their “why?”—why they’re in this work, why they want to see their own family and community changed for the better, why they are willing to give their time and energy to learning and doing more. We’re so grateful to be a part of their journey and to see where their commitment to being United Through Love takes them!

Inspired? Share your commitment to being United Through Love with us! Interested in learning more about Advocate Training? Reach out to contact@cpaf.info to be put in touch with our training coordinator.

Thank you for another successful API Youth Forum

On Saturday, May 13th, CPAF along with Families in Good Health (FiGH), South Asian Helpline and Referral Agency (SAHARA), and South Asian Network (SAN), co-hosted the annual Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Youth Forum. With over 100 attendees, the forum was attended by both parents and youth. Those who attended, along with youth performances, represented ethnically diverse backgrounds including Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Multicultural/Black, Salvadorian, Samoan, Taiwanese, Thai, and White allies. This year’s theme was Resilient, Not Silent, as intergenerational participants engaged with one another through breakout sessions on topics such as conflict mediation, housing and gentrification, cross-cultural communication, and how to get youth involved in social justice movements. Vendors included Groove with Food and Cre-Asian Society, with Miss Taiwanese American, Celine Huang, as the event keynote speaker and MC, Nadia, from WomenShelter of Long Beach.
