Grateful to be #UnitedThroughLove
This month, we share an inspiring story about the impact of the transitional shelter program on the lives of both families and staff, as well as express our gratitude for our partners in the community.
A Story of Healing & Hope – the Impact of the Transitional Shelter Program
Below, Transitional Shelter Manager, Sayaka Hashiguchi, reflects on what she and other staff experienced during a family outing to the pumpkin patch last month and the power of human connection.
One family was about to successfully graduate from the program, while the other family had just arrived at the shelter. Both were a family of two, with a little girl and mother. They seemed to enjoy it very much, with pony rides, face painting, the air jumper, slides, picking pumpkins, and eating ice cream. Staff noticed that the mother of the family that had just entered the shelter seemed to understandably have a lot on her mind. Staff remembered how the family that was about to graduate had also been like that when they first arrived. The child would be longing for more attention from the mother, but the mother was simply not engaged with the child. During the course of the program, the mother became more engaged and was able to bond with the child.
Staff were able to witness the impact of this program and became even more committed to providing opportunities for family outings to bond with one another. It became evident to staff that being able to go out and enjoy time in each other’s company is something families missed out on when they were in an abusive relationship. After the activity, the families expressed that they were very thankful to create a great memory.
The group outing was made possible thanks to CPAF’s generous community of supporters.
Thank you, Hands of Hope!
A big thank you to Yvonne Nishio and Naomi Uyeda, former CPAF board members, and now active advisory board members, for holding a pop-up jewelry sale in November. We are grateful to the young teen volunteers and supporters of the Hands of Hope pop-up sale. A special thanks to Sonya Gallardo, owner of the Highlow Gift Shop in Torrance, for hosting and personally donating to CPAF. Proceeds benefit CPAF’s Shelter Program.
CPAF Shares Curricula on Nonviolent Parenting
& Healthy Relationship Building
With the generous support of the Blue Shield of California Foundation and in collaboration with our community partners, CPAF is proud to have led the development of youth and parent curriculum on domestic violence prevention centered on nonviolence through increased empathy and gender equity. The curricula was utilized in four Asian American community parent and youth groups to promote more open discussion of intimate relationships, build domestic violence prevention skills, and to educate and organize community leaders to adapt traditional norms to promote gender equity.
